Project Information
Clearly and thoroughly address how each of the following elements will be exhibited in your work:
In preparation for this project, I will be studying the basics of the Spanish language so that I will be able to converse with the people of the village I am staying in. I will do this by spending 2-3 hours a week spending time with my Aunt, a Spanish teacher, studying Spanish. Also, I plan to do research on the history, culture, and geography of Honduras so that I will become more familiar with the nation. I will do this research by looking up different journal articles and informative websites on Honduras. By doing these things, I am accomplishing the learning outcome of possessing global literacy.
B. Interact with individuals from different cultures and express a sensitivity, appreciation and respect for the complex range of experiences of diverse peoples
During this experience, I will be interacting with people in the clinic I will be helping at, talking to them not just about whatever illness they might have, but also about the way that they live their daily lives, learning about life in their country from them. Also, when I am not working at the clinic, I will be interacting and playing with the children of the village, noticing the similarities and differences between children in America and in Honduras. By doing this, I will be interacting with people from a different culture.
C. Participate in a global society and understand the role of a global citizen
In this experience, I will be caring for patients of the clinic in the village, promoting their health. By doing this, I will be realizing that global health relies on interdependence of all nations. By promoting the health of the citizens of this village in Honduras, I will be participating in a global society.
B. In order to learn the basics of the Spanish language necessary for conversation, I will be studying from the Power-Glide Spanish Ultimate Year 1 and possibly the second year with my aunt so that I can learn at least some Spanish. Also, in order to prepare myself for this experience, I will study social theories of global health. The first of these, introduced by Robert Merton, is that all interventions have consequences, and so our actions must be evaluated to ensure that the consequences, both explicit and unseen, are not harmful. The second theory I will study further involves social suffering, which carries with it four main points. The first of this is that one’s economic or political conditions can cause disease. The second point is that social institutions can make medical errors and fail, resulting in the worsening of the disease. The third point is that suffering is not just limited to the patient, but can extend to the patient’s family, friends, and community as well. Finally, the fourth point is that health and social problems are not always separate items, but can be connected, and need to be treated as such. I found the information on these theories from the Lancet Journal online.
